The investigation of the global demand for the broadband service by TeleGeography, a market research company, indicated that the submarine cables market is experiencing a new term of investment boom since 2001. At least 25 new submarine cables with a total investment of over US$6.4B will be built during 2008 – 2010 and this scale may be further expanded. The construction of submarine cables is worldwide. TeleGeography indicated that network expansion was only one of the factors responsible for the investment boom. In fact, only 25% of the potential capacity of the existing submarine cables is utilized at present. Increase in network redundancy to avoid network fault is also an important factor for the construction heat of submarine cables.
