Cable Exhibition 2024 Briefing-On the Application Environment of Medium Voltage Cables

There are three voltage ranges available for cables. Cable Exhibition 2024 has learned that low-voltage designs have a rated voltage of 2,000 V and below, medium-voltage designs range from 2,000 to 35,000 V, and high-voltage cables have a rated voltage above 35,000 V.


David Sedivy, Senior Product Manager at TPC Wire & Cable Corp., explains that medium voltage cables are commonly used in mobile substation equipment, applied in industrial environments for power distribution and in the mining industry, supplying power to drills, shovels, transport vehicles, etc.


A common application of medium voltage cables is maintenance and repair. Utility personnel use mobile workstations to provide regular shutdown maintenance for substations or repairs due to damage caused by storms.


Copper and aluminum are the two main conductor materials. Cable Exhibition 2024 understands that in practical applications, copper is mainly used for medium voltage designs, while the lighter-weight aluminum is more commonly used for high voltage cables.


Medium voltage sheaths come in various materials. Cross-linked polyethylene or XLPE is one of the best-performing types, but materials such as ethylene propylene rubber (EPR), chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), and neoprene are also common. The primary considerations for cable manufacturers when selecting cable and sheath materials are whether the wall thickness is appropriate, compliance with UL and CSA standards, and the ability to withstand the working environment.


If medium voltage cables are to be directly buried, different design requirements apply depending on the situation. For example, the cable must meet specified area or mass requirements to carry current in the event of a fault.
