Wire Expo 2024 Industry News - Applications of Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cables

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables are a common type of data communication cable, consisting of two to 1800 pairs of unshielded twisted 100-ohm copper cables, encased in an external plastic sheath. Wire Expo 2024 has learned that this type of cable lacks a metal shielding layer, allowing it to maintain a streamlined diameter.

 

In horizontal cabling, the most common model within the outer sheath is four pairs of twisted cables, typically 24 AWG (American Wire Gauge), with other sizes also available.

 

UTP cables come in two types: solid and stranded conductors. Solid conductor UTP cables use a single wire and, due to the thicker wire, offer higher performance and greater durability than their stranded counterparts.

 

UTP cables are most commonly found in local area networks (LANs), and are used in computer networks, Ethernet, and telecommunications. Due to their relatively low cost, they are frequently used in building automation and control systems, audio and security systems, as well as for voice, low-speed data, and high-speed data applications.

 

Wire Expo 2024 has learned that in industrial and factory workshop environments, UTP cabling is often used to connect programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial Ethernet switches, and other network devices.

 

UTP cables are also widely used to connect external sensors and actuators, such as in DeviceNet, Modbus, and Profibus systems. Another common application is in access control systems, where UTP cables are used to connect control panels, card readers, and other security system components to restrict access. Compared to other cables, UTP cables have several advantages: they are cost-effective, compatible with most systems and devices, do not require grounding, and are smaller, more flexible, and easier to install.
